        Professional standards

        June 1, 2016

Psychology is a regulated profession in Australia. This means that in order to call myself a Psychologist or practice psychology I had to gain registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA), AHPRA Allied Health Practitioners Registration Association, and maintain membership with APS Australian Psychology Association. The PsyBA website includes a register of psychologists, so that you may check whether a person is registered. My professional services are in accordance with a strict code of ethics, written by the APS.

Please see links below that will take you to APS Australian Psychological Association and the PsyBA - AHPRA website if you wish to read more.

        Can Psychologists' prescribe medications?

        June 1, 2016

Although I work with people who have either or both a mental health condition or physical health condition, as a Psychologist, I do not prescribe medications. I do, however, work closely in conjunction with other health professionals, including General Practitioners and Psychiatrist around client’s medication needs, medication compliance or reviews.  All treatments conducted by Psychologists are designed to work alongside any medical treatments, and not in replacement of these.  The client's condition are discussed (with the clients prior signed consent) between all the treating team members which aims to ensure continuity of care is maintained.  Ultimately, meaning the best outcomes for the clients mental well being and physical health care can be achieved.

What does the role of a Psychologist include?

        June 1, 2016

As a Psychologist I apply my expertise using reliable and scientifically supported methods (otherwise known as evidenced based treatments or interventions, and recommended treatment guidelines) to determine which treatment modality is most suitable to your mental health diagnosis, or cognitive and physical abilities. These same rules apply to my ethical use and application of diagnostic screening tools and any assessments that I undertake.

Some, of the treatment modalities which I use are:

        Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

        Cognitive Remediation Training

        Health Behaviour Change Programs

        Interpersonal Therapy

        MiCBT Mindfulness Integrated CBT

Other modalities in which I have an interest are:

        Gestalt Psychology

        Psycho-dynamic Psychology

        June 1, 2016

As a Clinical Psychologist I am an expert in understanding how people think, feel, behave and react.  Part of my expertise includes understanding how these interactions influence our capacity for coping with and adjusting to life's ups and downs, as well in our everyday problem solving, and in our interactions with others.

Clinical Psychologists have undertaken advanced studies in a masters of clinical psychology. I undertook specific elective studies including specializations subjects about the brain and consciousness, and the neuro- biology of memory, learning, human development and ageing.

I also undertook extensive practicum experiences in a range of work environments with individuals spanning across the life span developmental stages. To maintain my registration, I must undertake ongoing professional learning, undertake regular peer supervision with another clinically endorsed colleague, and report my Professional Development annually to both APS, and AHPRA.

        To achieve this, I rema...
